Members of a United Nations professional panel monitoring North Korea sanctions reportedly discovered a hyperlink between the totalitarian state and the crypto mixer Twister Money.

In accordance with Reuters, a confidential doc from the screens instructed the U.N. Safety Council sanctions committee that North Korea used Twister Money to launder $147.5 million price of stolen crypto belongings earlier this 12 months.

The eight-member panel of consultants was disbanded in April after Russia vetoed the renewal of its mandate. Within the unfinished work they submitted on Friday, the screens say they had been investigating 97 suspected North Korean cyberattacks on cryptocurrency firms involving round $3.6 billion price of belongings.

The assaults, which occurred between 2017 and 2024, embrace the $147.5 million theft that focused Seychelles-based crypto change HTX final 12 months. The screens say information from crypto analytics agency PeckShield and blockchain analysis agency Elliptic present that the stolen funds had been laundered by Twister Money in March.

This 12 months alone, the screens checked out 11 cryptocurrency thefts valued at $54.7 million. Their report says a considerable variety of these assaults had been performed by North Korean IT staff that small crypto-related firms inadvertently employed.

In 2022, the U.S. Division of the Treasury’s Workplace of Overseas Belongings Management (OFAC) sanctioned Twister Money saying the platform laundered greater than $7 billion price of digital forex, together with over $455 million stolen by the North Korean hacker collective Lazarus Group.

North Korea is claimed to be counting on cyber assaults to finance its nuclear and missile packages.
